Kinky Rent Party

The cover of Rent Party tells a story but it is difficult to decode. The incoherence makes me think of Bill Alexander (as do the masked Mistresses in the back.

Not that i fault Stanton. His covers are usually easily intelligible. The editor or art director may have given him confusing instructions or wanted too many fetish elements.

I like the cover.

One classmate was future Spider-Man and Doctor Strange artist Steve Ditko, with whom Stanton shared a studio. Some of Stanton’s work during this period shows Ditko influence, and the introduction to one book of Stanton’s work says, “Eric Stanton drew his pictures in India ink, and they were then hand-coloured by Ditko”.[2] Ditko reportedly denied touching Stanton’s work, though Stanton himself said they would spot-ink each other’s art.

Pay the Devil is one of two Stanton covers – both for Unique Books – with supernatural elements.

Since the woman in the foreground has a riding crop – a favorite Stanton artifact – we know she’s dominant, perhaps a cult leader. Looks as if she may have met her match in the succubus, demoness rising from the pit.

Proving himself a master of the bondage genre, Stanton created an impressive number of stories … In the early 1960s, he became an independent illustrator, often working for rich clients who ordered his work for private use. His work has been published in numerous European magazines, like Bédé X, Blue and Kiss Comix.

After Klaw died in 1966, Stanton supported himself by self-publishing and distributing his work to a quasi-underground network of subscribers and patrons. His mimeographed/photocopied Stantoons comic-book series continued to his death in 1999 and featured many of his best-known post-Klaw concepts, including the superheroine Blunder Broad, and the Amazon-like Princkazons.

During the mid-1960s Bill Alexander, Gene Bilbrew and Eric Stanton did cover art for Unique Books.

Desire & Discipline’s femdomish aspect – aside from the title – is that the person in the green dress is a guy. Perhaps the novel featured feminization and sissyfication as well as simple crossdressing.

The blond woman looks distressed. The man with the beard appeared on more than one cover.

Born and raised in New York City, Stanton began his career in 1947 at Irving Klaw’s Movie Star News company, gaining employment by boasting he could draw better than any of the artists then working for Klaw.[citation needed] He afterward attended the Cartoonists and Illustrators School, under Batman inker Jerry Robinson and others.
