Despite the original novel’s place in the history of female domination and male submission / masochism very, very few peopl seem to have read it.

  • It’s odd how he ticks off the various femdom tropes so early. An intense read, but not very explicit.

    • I never could manage to read it. But from skimming I was surprised how many of the traditional elements associated with female domination were present in the novel.

There’s a fairly faithful movie adaptation, done in Holland but with an English language option.

  • The opening is quite enchanting, but the whole thing isn’t really much of a story. Also, Masoch himself was abit of an arse.

  • I think I’ve mentioned before how I love that book. It’s my Godfather, my Bible, my Empire Strikes Back. I believe every little thing I’ve ever felt and experienced as a fetishist is there in a way I can relate to. And a really well built piece of literature too.

That said, Crepax version is very loosely based on the Masoch novel. But then, that’s the way Crepax would do anything. He did the same with Stoker’s Dracula. And the result is really fine, if you don’t expect it to be a comic-book faithful rendition of a literary work.

To gilesenglish – I’m not sure Leopold Sacher-Masoch was an arse. A very interesting charcahter himself, as far as I can tell from Bernard Michel’s biography.
