I’m trying to decide exactly what’s going on in that first picture. That’s just not a natural position.
It does look as if he’s been hit or slapped by someone invisible.
Some smoke seems to be coming through the curtains. So my guess is that he’s fainting, having been overwhelmed by some sort of drugged incense. Common enough in trashy fiction in the first half of the last century.
