Only a tangential point, but it was Theodore Sturgeon (whose name appears on the other ‘Venture’ cover as a reviewer), who made Vulcan a matriarchy, where for no logical (!) reason whatever, men went insane before their weddings and had to fight their best friend to the death. I’m sure this will be the case in all alien matriarchies.

It’s by the very young Poul Andersen, and it’s pretty badly written. He did better, though less femdominated, in his later years.
